The next Chelsea Salon Series Salon will be run by Fiona and Jenny. They have worked in a variety of interesting and exciting ways to realise their ideas in different art forms. Fiona and Jenny would like to capture the adventurous and experimental spirit of their Askew events and first salons held at Chelsea College in the  year that they took their course.

This means that this salon will be open and encouraging. There is no specific theme, but the aim is for students to be experimental, risk taking and daring! It doesn’t have to be pieces that you are working on at the moment. It doesn’t have to be something that is finished and final. For example, try working in a different format or media or with subject matter other than what you usually use. What about using dance, music, poetry or cooking something new  you haven’t tried before! We really want to encourage performance and interaction. Think about those ‘60s and ‘70s ‘happenings’ which embraced the experimental and free thinking zeitgeist...

The salon will be held at Harts Lane Studio in New Cross Gate on August 3rd. Installation will begin at 11am and de-installation must be complete by 6pm on the same day. It is the responsibility of the artist(s) to deliver and install you work, so please be prepared.

The salons are open to the public and we encourage you to invite anyone you'd like to attend.

About Whitty Gordon Projects Fiona Whitty and Jenny Gordon are artists and filmmakers who met on the MA Fine Art course at Chelsea College of Art & Design in 2009. Since graduating together they initiated ‘Askew’, which was a multi-disciplinary platform for artists to exhibit work in galleries and found spaces across London. Since then, they have set up Whitty Gordon Projects and have collaborated together on In-Between Spaces Jamaica, funded by Open Vizor 2010, 2011 and again in 2012, where they intend to continue to develop their artistic projects with the community of downtown Kingston.

Fiona is Irish and Jenny is British/Jamaican. Cultural Identity is a theme that is explored in the work of Whitty Gordon Projects which shine a light on the unseen lives and stories in downtown Kingston, Jamaica through the medium of short films. Their work is experimental and documentary style, dealing with many aspects of the human condition and identity, nature, loss and migration.

For Display Purposes Only*

HEAT, SMOKE, KITCHEN UTENSILS, SOUND, SOUND INSULATION, DETERGENT,
3-D and 2-D work'. Some of the works in this exhibition concentrate
on the use of senses other than sight. This not only refers
to works producing or dampening aural sensations (a.k.a sound-art),
but to the 'clean' smell of detergents and the hotness of a heater.
How much are we willing or prepared to invest in a
work that is not only 'in front of our eyes'?
There are other themes emerging from the clutter of this seemingly eclectic mix of art work : “experiments” that might remind one of
high-school science classes, diy sound insulation that
could look like an empty canvas, collapsed cardboard structures that
could get more attention than the ones next to a bin, organised
detergents in the style of dot painting or a religious ritual,
painting and drawing a picture, buying a heater from Argos,
mimicking a guitar body or stacking clay. The materials used reflect
what is readily available.
FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY
Is a group show featuring the work of eight international artists based in South East London. For further information please visit the individual artist’s websites listed below.

June Update

 Hello Everyone,

We're currently working on a few projects and will be updating the blog very soon. A few things to look forward to are 2 events at the Bussey Building opening June 18th and July 18th.

We're also working with former Chelsea students in coordinating a salon in Clapton as well as looking at a space in Battersea for sculpture, installation, video and sound works.

We'll update the blog as soon as we've confirmed dates.

best,

Laura & Josh
