Thank You for Your Enthusiasm and Involvement in the Core Arts Salon

Rebecca Rendell   - MA Fine Art Chelsea College 2012/13
Dear all,
we would like to thank you for your enthusiasm and involvement in the Core Arts salon event that we held on Friday evening. We really enjoyed hearing you present your work, getting to meet you properly and the discussions that followed.

It was somewhat of a challenge to run the timetable of activities in the way we wanted to, as not everything went to plan (which often happens when you are collaborating with external multi functioning space and partners) but we think everyone managed very well, even with the beginning background noise of sound checks and so on! We hope that you enjoyed the informal and relaxed style of the salon event which is a way that we like to engage with you and your work, including external contacts.

We are in the planning stages for more salon events in a range of different spaces across London which will be geared towards work that is digital/ film for example, performance and painting. We are also working on an event that will involve students from other MA courses (curating and art theory) at the college, perhaps involving responding to a text or other catalyst....

We will be working towards creating a new website soon as well, but in the meantime please check our blog site chelseasalonseries.blogspot.co.uk where we will post the showreel and photos from the Core Arts salon event.

If you are on Facebook then please join our group called Chelsea Salon Series which you can search for.

Many Thanks

The Chelsea Salon Series hosted by Core Arts

Current MA fine Art students at Chelsea College compered by Brian Chalkley in association with Joshua Y'Barbo, Jenny Gordon, Fiona Whitty & Kate Ross present a Salon exhibition of theirs and Core Artists work. Experimenting with concepts seemingly unrelated to their practice with an evening of casual feedback from fellow students, alumni and Core Arts studio artists. 6-8.30pm
Sophie O'Neill studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, then went on to complete a BA at Central St. Martin's College in Graphic Design. Her move to study Design was prompted by the feeling that it could provide a practical way to earn a living as a creative practitioner. Inevitably O'Neill returned to her first love – the world of Fine Art. Over the past two yearsCore Arts has been the catalyst that has enabled her to explore herartistic potential and develop as an artist. In Concept PaintingO'Neill experiments with the borders between figurative portrait painting, abstraction and the ideas that link the two.

Core Printmakers show work produced in the Core Arts printmaking studio.
Access To Music Showcase, performers from the UK's most prodigious music course, which has launched the careers of chart toppers Ed Sheeran & The Saturdays, showcase live at Core Arts plus many special guest musicians and DJ's
DOOR: 6pm-11pm TIME: Music from 8.30 -11pm

COST: FREE ENTRY

VENUE: Core Arts Gallery

ADDRESS: 109 Homerton High Street Hackney E9 6DL (bottom of Chatsworth Rd E9 next to St Barnabas Church, easy buses/Homerton Overground 5 mins away)

Licensed bar, proper community vibe
CORE ARTS:Forging its own path in largely uncharted territory between arts centre, community space and commercial art gallery, Core Arts is first and foremost a creative hub with strong links to the local community. Core Arts is run exclusively by practicing artists and musicians, for artists and musicians who have, or have had, severe and enduring mental health issues.
Artwork or performance at Core Arts is not judged or displayed on these terms. Pigeon-holes that categorise into ‘outsider’ or ‘therapy’ are strongly avoided. Individuality and creativity are respected and nurtured; artists are encouraged to develop their own strategies. Often, professional artists, musicians and writers share the same wall, stage and page as Core Arts members, without hierarchy. The results are exciting, refreshing and challenge both artistic and mental health preconceptions and clichés.
This show, with a host of exhibitors including many highly respected professionals from all areas of the arts, reinforcing and supporting Core Arts philosophy, is an introduction to the pioneering approach that Core Arts has pursued since its conception some 20 years ago.

Painting In Conversation: An International Exhibition of Paintings Made by Artists on Chelsea's MA in Fine Art

Painting In Conversation:An International Exhibition of Paintings Made by Artists on Chelsea's MA in Fine Art

Chelsea’s MAFA is comprised of an international body of artists who have all brought with them their unique cultural, political, and art making values influenced by their respective homes.

This exhibition addresses the opportunities, unanticipated changes in trajectory, and even difficulties that have come about as a result of the shared intimate environment in the studio spaces with colleagues from all over the globe. Indeed, the conversations we have in our studios each day-- about painting history, our work, our lives and insights on the world--are proving to be influential for us and this exhibition showcases paintings that have been realised in this context. The works in this exhibition are a visual manifestation of our ongoing critical dialog with one another, spoken by manifold painters in manifold tongues.

Artists:
Jean Kim, Liz Elton, Nicholas Dedics, Adam de Boer, Johanna Keogh, Maarten Van Den Bos, Dalia Baassiri, Alison Lucas, Mohammad Namazi, Michal Kozlowski, Yue Xiaofei, Nakyoung Kim, Sakura Mori, Sanghyun Kim, Sejung Lee, Shiew Eng Hii, Xiao-yang Li, Soo Eun Baik, Thekla Ek, Jae Youn Won, Xingyue Zhang, Yuma Tomiyasu, Alejandro Salcedo Barrero, Chen-Shih Lu, Rebecca Byrne, Kan Xie

The next Chelsea Salon Series Salon will be run by Fiona and Jenny. They have worked in a variety of interesting and exciting ways to realise their ideas in different art forms. Fiona and Jenny would like to capture the adventurous and experimental spirit of their Askew events and first salons held at Chelsea College in the  year that they took their course.

This means that this salon will be open and encouraging. There is no specific theme, but the aim is for students to be experimental, risk taking and daring! It doesn’t have to be pieces that you are working on at the moment. It doesn’t have to be something that is finished and final. For example, try working in a different format or media or with subject matter other than what you usually use. What about using dance, music, poetry or cooking something new  you haven’t tried before! We really want to encourage performance and interaction. Think about those ‘60s and ‘70s ‘happenings’ which embraced the experimental and free thinking zeitgeist...

The salon will be held at Harts Lane Studio in New Cross Gate on August 3rd. Installation will begin at 11am and de-installation must be complete by 6pm on the same day. It is the responsibility of the artist(s) to deliver and install you work, so please be prepared.

The salons are open to the public and we encourage you to invite anyone you'd like to attend.

About Whitty Gordon Projects Fiona Whitty and Jenny Gordon are artists and filmmakers who met on the MA Fine Art course at Chelsea College of Art & Design in 2009. Since graduating together they initiated ‘Askew’, which was a multi-disciplinary platform for artists to exhibit work in galleries and found spaces across London. Since then, they have set up Whitty Gordon Projects and have collaborated together on In-Between Spaces Jamaica, funded by Open Vizor 2010, 2011 and again in 2012, where they intend to continue to develop their artistic projects with the community of downtown Kingston.

Fiona is Irish and Jenny is British/Jamaican. Cultural Identity is a theme that is explored in the work of Whitty Gordon Projects which shine a light on the unseen lives and stories in downtown Kingston, Jamaica through the medium of short films. Their work is experimental and documentary style, dealing with many aspects of the human condition and identity, nature, loss and migration.

For Display Purposes Only*

HEAT, SMOKE, KITCHEN UTENSILS, SOUND, SOUND INSULATION, DETERGENT,
3-D and 2-D work'. Some of the works in this exhibition concentrate
on the use of senses other than sight. This not only refers
to works producing or dampening aural sensations (a.k.a sound-art),
but to the 'clean' smell of detergents and the hotness of a heater.
How much are we willing or prepared to invest in a
work that is not only 'in front of our eyes'?
There are other themes emerging from the clutter of this seemingly eclectic mix of art work : “experiments” that might remind one of
high-school science classes, diy sound insulation that
could look like an empty canvas, collapsed cardboard structures that
could get more attention than the ones next to a bin, organised
detergents in the style of dot painting or a religious ritual,
painting and drawing a picture, buying a heater from Argos,
mimicking a guitar body or stacking clay. The materials used reflect
what is readily available.
FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY
Is a group show featuring the work of eight international artists based in South East London. For further information please visit the individual artist’s websites listed below.
Private View Monday June 18th,  6 – 10pm.

Update: Round Chapel Salon- Participating Artists and Install Details

Hello Everyone,

I am sorry about the late reply but i have an updated list of participants and install team memebers. Please note that *Everyone from Camberwell, Wimbledon and all Alumni are welcome to install their own work due to smaller numbers. If anyone has any questions, please email Kate, Laura or myself at chelseasalonseries@gmail.com

best,

Josh

Chelsea Salon Series at Round Chapel

Installation Details:
Time: Installation will start at 10am on Thurs, April 26th.
The event is from 17:00 – 21:00.
After this, all works need to be collect and removed from the space. Anyone needing to arrange to have their works picked up the following day will need to do so with one of us on the salon team. Pick-up on Friday, April 27th will be between 10am-3:30pm. Anything not removed will be disposed of.

Notes on installation: participants are required to provide their own installation materials. We will not have the items that have been approved to use in the space, which I’ve mentioned below.

1.    We're not able to drill into the walls but blue / white tack or adhesive backed hooks are acceptable.
2.   Hang wire can be used to hang work in the stair wells and off the balcony and in between columns.
3.    There are step ladders and tables available to use for installation and showing work. No plynths are available so bring your own.
4.    Anyone looking to hire a van, should look at Addison Lee. They run very cheap rates but do not allow you to ride with the work so there needs to be people at the site to unload.

I will be at the site from 10am onward and can help organise the unloading of work.

I've asked the participants who visited the site last Friday to help on during the installation as they are familiar with the space. I've listed these participants below.
*Everyone from Camberwell, Wimbledon and all Alumni are welcome to install their own work due to smaller numbers.
