Hello Everyone,

I am sorry about the late reply but i have an updated list of participants and install team memebers. Please note that *Everyone from Camberwell, Wimbledon and all Alumni are welcome to install their own work due to smaller numbers. If anyone has any questions, please email Kate, Laura or myself at chelseasalonseries@gmail.com

best,

Josh

Chelsea Salon Series at Round Chapel

Installation Details:
Time: Installation will start at 10am on Thurs, April 26th.
The event is from 17:00 – 21:00.
After this, all works need to be collect and removed from the space. Anyone needing to arrange to have their works picked up the following day will need to do so with one of us on the salon team. Pick-up on Friday, April 27th will be between 10am-3:30pm. Anything not removed will be disposed of.

Notes on installation: participants are required to provide their own installation materials. We will not have the items that have been approved to use in the space, which I’ve mentioned below.

1.    We're not able to drill into the walls but blue / white tack or adhesive backed hooks are acceptable.
2.   Hang wire can be used to hang work in the stair wells and off the balcony and in between columns.
3.    There are step ladders and tables available to use for installation and showing work. No plynths are available so bring your own.
4.    Anyone looking to hire a van, should look at Addison Lee. They run very cheap rates but do not allow you to ride with the work so there needs to be people at the site to unload.

I will be at the site from 10am onward and can help organise the unloading of work.

I've asked the participants who visited the site last Friday to help on during the installation as they are familiar with the space. I've listed these participants below.
*Everyone from Camberwell, Wimbledon and all Alumni are welcome to install their own work due to smaller numbers.

UPDATE - Salon at Round Chapel on APRIL 26th

interior of the Round Chapel
Hello Everyone,

Just a quick update on the salon at Round Chapel. Please, have a look and pay close attention to details regarding the Install Team if you are working in 2-D. This is very important for participants to understand. The shows are not curated. The idea behind a salon is to show case a wide variety of fine art practises and not just a particular theme or topic. This allows for multiple areas of discourse to be reached and to be followed up on through a publication we are planning to release post event.

1. deadline for payment and submissions are Monday, April 23rd.

The online payment system is now live and ready for you to pay your £10 fee for the Round Chapel Salon on 26th April.

Once you have paid the £10 then that will confirm your slot to show your work at the salon. Please pay as soon as possible as this will help us to arrange everything else and organise our funds for more events. One person can pay for other people as well and you will need to write their names in too, so that we can keep a record of everyone who has paid.

I’ll be keeping track of who has paid and chasing up those who haven’t, so that we’ve got a completed list of who is confirmed to show their work.
You will need to set up an account which doesn’t take long, if you don’t already have one.
The link to pay is below so click on it, register and then you can pay

2. A  second site visit to Round Chapel is scheduled for this Friday 20th April at 4pm.
location: 1d Glenarm Road Hackney E5 0LY. We've had to reschedule due to scheduling conflicts. Apologies.

We need the Install Team to be present as well as any participants who would like to have a look at the space and voice their opinions. (*anyone wishing to visit the site over the weekend of April 13-15th, please send an email and we’ll try to arrange).

3. Install Team:  We need 5 Volunteers to email chelseasalonseries@gmail.com from each course to be on the install team. These students will be crucial in the way work is installed and displayed. Also the install team will coordinate van and equipment hire with others on their courses. We will be available to help coordinate the install team
  • Van & Equipment Hire: We can not provide any money for van hire or equipment. We can suggest places to contact in the case that the Colleges don't have the equipment needed but can not get involved with either hire due to costs and insurance.
  • Placement of Works: The placement of works will be decided by the install team with as much consideration for participants requests as possible. Certain works will need to be installed by the artist. In these situations, this needs to be approved by Laura or myself. Laura Carew, Kate Ross, Robert Cliff (editing the post salon publication) and myself will work with the install team to make sure everyone's work is given the most consideration in installation and presentation. We do not have a concrete plan and would urge 2-D artists to visit the space Thurs, 19th to voice their opinions and concerns. This is a very specific space with little wall space.  I would like to emphasise the role of the install team and ourselves in placing the works. Some of the ideas discussed are listed below;
  1. using the existing architecture as a positive element and working with the original architecture
  2. using furniture available to us in the space such as round tables and chair
  3. using the round tables to discuss topics / discourse of interest
  4. paintings can be leant against front row benched on the upper gallery level, using the decorative balcony grid as a ‘window’ onto the work  as well as hanging from the arches on the first floor
  5. use the large floor space as wall space by showing the works on the floor so they'd be viewed from the 2nd floor balcony with partitions to prevent people from walking on the paintings...
  6. aisles between bench seating could be used to show work
Current Install Team:
Chelsea: Elena Artigas - MAFA, Saba Zavarei - MAFA, Jamie Barbor - PgDip, Helen Turner-MRes
Camberwell: currently no volunteers
Wimbledon: currently no volunteers

4. notes about the space: for video / installation / etc...
i. there are a number of plug points on both sides of the space
there is a pulpit area that could be used for a bar/ performances
it would be easy to project material onto the walls in several ways around the space and in the corridors.

5. Publication: The publication is something new. Based on the writings of Charles Baudelaire and the Parisian Salons, it will be a post salon followup with the chance to publish written works, feedback comments and images from the event. Robert Cliff will be editing the publication and working with Kate Ross. We are looking for ways to fill the content of this publication and welcome contributions ideas and feedback. If you are interested in contributing, please email us at the salon series email address.

6. BAR: The Chelsea MA Catalogue Team has been contacted to organise the bar as a fundrasier. Please, talk to your course representative on this team to offer help and support.

We have a volunteer from Wimbledon who has expressed interested in setting up a bar as well. Please, contact Amelia Critchlow ameliacritchlow@hotmail.com if you are on a course at Wimbledon to volunteer.

I hope that answers your questions. I wanted to make another point that we are solely volunteering our time for Chelsea Salon Series and by no means receiving financial gain. We are all alumni who are donating our time to help provide opportunities for current students and fellow alumni. We try very hard to ask for little to no financial contribution out of respect for fees already paid for studies. Having said this, financial obligations do occur and we weigh these against the potential gain for everyone involved.

best,

Joshua

Round Chapel Salon - April 26th 2012

To participate at this point, we need an email to chelseasalonseries@gmail.com
with your name, course / college (current & alumni) and short description of work / requirements, etc...

Giang Le - MA Fine Art Camberwell College

Hello Everyone,

Thank to Kate Ross, we have an exciting opportunity to use the Round Chapel at 1d Glenarm Road E5 0LY in Hackney. The Round Chapel is a wonderful Grade II listed historic building and holds nearly 800 people. Information on the Round Chapel can be found here http://www.hhbt.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7&Itemid=8

This is an exciting and excellent opportunity to use this unique location for all mediums. The space is vast and should allow for most projects to be realized within the space. We’re looking for all types of work and would like to include a talk by an invited guest (TBA), a show reel for works that can be shown on one and a schedule of performances.

We’re also looking for participants from all MAs at Chelsea and extending the invitation to Camberwell and Wimbledon MA students. In addition to current CCW MA students, we’re sending out invitations to selected Alumni who have participated in previous salons.

The date for the Salon is April 26th. This is just after your Easter Holiday and just before the first round of your Interim Show. Installation will take place during the day and the Salon will run 17:00 - 21:00.

There will be a £10 fee for all participants and we are in the process of setting up an account with budget code connected to the College. This fee covers the venue hire and to repay the underwritten amount that has been put forth to secure the space for the evening. Anything left will be used for the publication, guest speakers or towards the next salon event.
We will need an install team of 5+ people from each college. These students will be responsible for collecting work, coordinating van hire and installation. All participants ares are responsible for booking their own equipment. We are unable to put forth money for either van or equipment hire do to insurance cost and general lack of funds. Students who need to install their own work must arrange with Josh before hand.

We are not running a bar as part of the venue.  If students are interested in using this opportunity to raise funds by setting up a bar, please contact Josh.
We will be working on a short publication for this event to be overseen by Robert Cliff and we would like to plan for short essay / writings by MA Curating, Art Theory, MRes students.

Please, send your inquires and feedback to Laura and I at chelseasalonseries@gmail.com

Best,

Josh and Laura

2012 Updates

Hello Everyone,
This is a long over due post. Thank you everyone who participated in the Brunswick House salon. There has been some very interesting feedback about the event. I hope people enjoyed it and had a chance to get something out of it.

We're looking for video footage, images and written response from the two Brunswick House salons to archive the events on the blog. The blog is linked to the Chelsea College website and provide exposure for  the participants and the series. Please, email Laura or myself at lacarew@gmail.com or joshuaybarbo@gmail.com
Moving on into the New Year, we'd like to make a shift towards 2-D, 3-D / installation work. Performance and video are still welcome. We're considering using two spaces over the coming months.
1. Chisenhale Gallery: The date will be in July depending on availability of staff and the overall effect of the Olympics on the area.
Last year, the salon was a great success and I hope we'll have the opportunity to do it for this year. I'll keep everyone updated and announce a date as soon as one is confirmed.
2. Beaconsfield Gallery: This date is also yet to be confirmed but planned for next month, subject to availability. The spaces is a unique space and situated just south of Millbank in Lambeth. P
As always we're eager to hear from students across the MAs at Chelsea College and welcome proposals for events. We're interested in site-specific, themed, group and individual proposals and projects.
all the best,
Laura & Josh

Chelsea Salon Series 2011-12

Jamie Wang - Chelsea College of Art & Design 2010-11

AIM: The Chelsea Salon Series  is conceived as an initiative offering students the opportunity to meet outside the college premises in a variety of spaces to exchange ideas and forge productive relationships with galleries , arts institutions and the locality. Chelsea College of Art is well placed to take advantage of  the proximity of not-for–profit spaces who are eager to make these relationships. The Chelsea Salon Series is structured in such a way that allows for both PRACTICE and RESEARCH to be pursued alongside the curriculum in relaxed surroundings outside the academic  institution with fellow MA Fine Art students and other invited artists ,alumni, curators and arts professionals. Although centered around Chelsea specifically it is intended to be inclusive and open . and that this remit could help pave the way for support from educational charities.
